Background. Wagner composed the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. Framnig hte Program Richard Wagner wrote the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday gift for his new wife, Cosima (who was Franz Liszt’s daughter), and on Christmas morning 1870 conducted a chamber ensemble version of the piece on the staircase of their house. “Suddenly I heard music, and what music!” Cosima noted in her diary. The Idyll draws its principal themes from the third act of its namesake—Wagner’s Siegfried; the theme given out by the first violins in the opening bars (the most important idea in the work) is the opera’s so-called “Peace” theme.
